What causes a Rolex bracelet to stretch?
The term “bracelet stretch” describes the looseness or sag that develops between the links of a worn bracelet. The metal links themselves do not normally stretch. Instead, years of movement gradually wear the pins, tubes and contact points inside the bracelet.
Dirt, dust, skin oils and other particles can collect between the links and form an abrasive paste. Every movement of the wrist then causes additional wear. Bracelets worn particularly loose can deteriorate more quickly because the links have greater freedom to move against each other.
As the internal components wear, the spaces between the links become larger. The bracelet begins to sag, feel unstable and sit less securely on the wrist. If the wear is allowed to continue, pins or other components may eventually fail, potentially resulting in damage to or loss of the bracelet and watch 🙁 .
Professional bracelet restoration addresses the worn internal components rather than simply cleaning or polishing the outside.
Rolex bracelets we can restore
We can restore and tighten many vintage and modern Rolex bracelets, including:
- Rolex Jubilee bracelets
- Rolex Oyster bracelets , 93150 , 93250 78360 78350 etc
- Rolex President bracelets
- Stainless-steel bracelets
- Steel-and-gold / two-tone, bracelets
- 18ct Yellow, White and Rose-Gold bracelets
- Folded-link Oyster bracelets, including reference 9315 , 7836 etc
- Older USA-made oval-link Jubilee bracelets
- Bracelet clasps, end links and connecting components
We can also repair selected Omega sprung and woven bracelets, together with bracelets and clasps from other luxury watch manufacturers such as Breitling , Cartier , IWC .
The condition and construction of every bracelet is different. An inspection is therefore necessary before we can confirm exactly what work is possible.
Rolex Jubilee bracelet restoration
The Rolex Jubilee bracelet contain numerous small links and connecting pins. Its flexible design makes it comfortable to wear, but long-term use can produce considerable looseness between the links generally caused by internal pins becoming thin and liable to break.Jubilee bracelets with Gold links also suffer wear to the sides which will result in the internal pins becoming visible . Repair of these parts will be sometimes necessary on older very worn bracelets
A Jubilee bracelet restoration will involve repairing or replacing worn internal pins, correcting excessive movement and attending to worn clasp connections. The objective is to produce a safer, tighter bracelet without removing the character that belongs to a genuine vintage watch.
Steel, two-tone and gold Jubilee bracelets can all be assessed by pictures email to us quite quickly.
Rolex Oyster bracelet tightening
Oyster bracelets can also develop noticeable sag and sideways movement, especially when worn loosely or when dirt has been allowed to accumulate between the links. We use the exact Stainless Steel ie 316/904L to Laser weld repair worn areas of your bracelet which returns the bracelet to original dimensions
Depending on the bracelet’s condition, restoration can involve strengthening or replacing worn components and internal pins as well as Laser welding the worn areas on the link parts We will also attend to the clasp or end-link connections. Older folded Oyster bracelets, including the Rolex 9315, require an approach appropriate to their original construction.
We assess each Oyster bracelet carefully before starting any restoration and a firm cost is given.
Rolex President and gold bracelet restoration
Worn 18ct gold bracelets require particular care. Gold is softer than stainless steel, and badly worn links will require new internal Gold Pins together with specialist gold Solder and Laser work to build up worn areas of the bracelet. It is worth taking into consideration that if worn regularly Gold will wear and with slightly worn Gold bracelets it isnt always necessary to undergo a full restoration but concentrate only on a few areas of the bracelet to give the bracelet extra life whilst keepings costs down.
We can assess stretched Rolex President bracelets, gold Jubilee bracelets, damaged end links and broken or weakened gold clasps. Where a clasp has fractured, the surrounding metal must also be examined because the visible break may be only part of the problem.
The purpose of the restoration is to preserve as much of the original bracelet as reasonably possible while improving its strength, fit and appearance.
What does bracelet restoration involve?
The exact work depends on the design and condition of the bracelet. A restoration may include:
- Inspection of the links, pins, tubes and clasp
- Measurement of the existing movement and sag
- Replacement or strengthening of worn internal components/pins
- New clasp pins where required
- Repairs to damaged links, end pieces or connecting hoops
- Specialist work to steel, two-tone or 18ct gold components
- Clasp repairs where restoration is practical
- Refinishing , polishing and Cleaning and final inspection
Not every bracelet requires every operation. We only recommend work that is appropriate to the bracelet being examined. Related case and bracelet refinishing is available through our Watch Case and Bracelet Refinishing service.

The warranty does not cover subsequent accidental damage, misuse, new wear, damage to components that were not included in the restoration or problems arising from work performed elsewhere. Full details can be confirmed when the bracelet is assessed.
Restoration versus replacement
A replacement Rolex bracelet can be extremely expensive and may not always be appropriate for a vintage or collectable watch. The original bracelet can form an important part of the watch’s history and character.
Where restoration is practical, it can offer several benefits:
- Retention of the watch’s original bracelet
- Improved fit and comfort
- Reduced movement between worn links
- Improved security
- A considerable saving compared with replacement
- Preservation of period-correct components
- An extended working life for the bracelet
A bracelet must still be inspected before restoration can be recommended. Components that are severely damaged, previously altered or worn beyond a safe limit may require additional work.
Caring for a restored Rolex bracelet
- Keep the bracelet clean, particularly between the links.
- Avoid wearing the bracelet excessively loose.
- Rinse away salt water and perspiration when appropriate.
- Do not use aggressive chemicals or abrasive cleaning products.
- Have unusual looseness, damaged screws or clasp problems investigated promptly.
- Avoid allowing an inexperienced repairer to bend, hammer or tighten the links.
